My Country. My Inspiration
Fred Bullen - Paintings, sculptures, prints
Roger Speaight – Translucent watercolours
Two local contemporary artists, two different perspectives
Fred Bullen
Award winning Fred joined the local art society on the Mid North Coast when he moved from Sydney 15 years ago and he's never looked back. He started with traditional landscapes on canvas and then moving on to large format boards for abstract works, often with very heavily textured surfaces.
His inspiration comes from the local bush and beach which are then reproduced in one of many styles such as ‘abstract realism’.
As much as Fred enjoys the challenge of painting a wide variety of subjects using an equally wide range of techniques, his greatest pleasure comes from hearing that an artwork has unlocked a heartfelt memory for the viewer
Roger Speaight
Award winning Roger’s background is in art, working as an advertising art director until retirement. He first began painting watercolours at the age of 16, and his deep love for the medium has never waned.
In its purest form, translucent watercolour is a challenging medium to work in, and hard to master. To achieve a work that is fresh and spontaneous, it requires striking a balance between controlling the combinations of water, pigment and paper, and allowing this wonderfully unpredictable medium to have its own way.
Roger’s works are primarily wide landscapes and seascapes in which he strives to capture the atmosphere of a scene rather than its detail. His aim is that his paintings are emotive and powerful in their simplicity, and this is reflected in his unique, contemporary, minimalist style.
