JULIE SHEA

CRACKING ICE

SEE WHAT I SAY

In the synchronous exhibitions - Cracking Ice & See What I Say? - Julie Shea experiments on paper with visual perception and a broad range of spontaneous and orchestrated creative processes.

Cracking Ice describes the artist searching for release from a stubborn lethargy. Traditional drawing, Dada techniques, sporadic accidents, recombining, collages, apophenia, whims and contrivances are used to escape the solidity of procrastination and indecision known as “creative freeze”. Unexpected outcomes illustrate the process of a slow thaw, and direct the intuitive flow that is initiated.

In See What I Say? Julie’s experimental pareidolia works expose the mutability of interpretation of visual information. Ink splashes are interpreted using randomised cues and clarified by representational drawing to demonstrate our ability to see what we will.

The artist alternates between surrender and control in these making /thinking/being processes, using them to order chaos and melt certainty.

The exhibition is being held at the Macleay Valley Community Gallery, Gladstone, NSW, from Wednesday January 4 until Sunday January 15. Open daily.

Join the artist for an informative talk on Sunday January 8 at 11:00 am.
